Definition of Respiratory Therapy
According to the America association of respiratory care, respiratory therapy is an organized medical professional, providing diagnosis, treatment and care to those who have cardiopulmonary defects or abnormalities under doctor’s advice or instruction.
 
How To Become Respiratory Therapist
A. In America
In the hospital or medical school with department of respiratory therapy, students will have 1, 2, or 4 year program for different basic students, and need to complete certain hour of clinical practice before graduation. Usually, there are three school types:
1. Affiliated to the hospital.
2. An independent respiratory therapist school.
3. Affiliated to a university or medical school. Most of the schools grant degrees.
Students who have one-year clinical experience after graduated from GRTT (Graduate Respiratory Therapy Therapist program) or GRT (Graduate Respiratory Therapy Technician program) are eligible to take a NBRC examination. If passed, students will be licensed and can work legally and independently as an respiratory therapist called Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).

B. In Taiwan
1. Each therapist was trained by the respective medical center before1994.
2. Since 1994 a six-month training course was organized by the Respiratory Care Association of Republic of China, co-organized by hospitals, and sponsored by Department of Health (now Ministry of Health and Welfare). This was the main training program to be a respiratory therapist. Until February 2002, 13 training courses had been held and there were 967 respiratory therapists trained.
3. On January 16 2002, the law of the respiratory therapy was announced by president and implemented. Since the time the Taiwan Society for Respiratory Therapy constitution removed its burden of training therapists and turned to focus on continuing education, whereas the formal education system took the responible for incubating respiratory therapists. Now there are many colleges with Department of Respiratory Therapy including Chang Gung University, Taipei Medical University, Kao Hsiung Medical University, China Medical University, Chang Gung University of Science and Technology (ChiaYi Campus), and Fu Jen Catholic University.
